The Rise and Fall of NewLeaf Potatoes
نویسنده
چکیده
From 1995 through 2001, genetically modified potatoes were sold in the United States and Canada under the brand name NewLeafTM. These potato varieties were relatively popular with growers because they replaced pest-control practices involving intensive use of pesticides with technology that was present in the potato seed. Market tests indicated that the concept of reduced pesticide use through biotechnology was also interesting to consumers. Despite being popular with growers and consumers, sales of NewLeafTM potatoes plummeted after the 1999 growing season. I will outline some of the factors that made these potatoes popular, and then examine the issues that led to the rapid decline in sales and their eventual removal from the market. With that information as a background, I will attempt to evaluate the challenges and opportunities for biotechnology adoption in the potato industry in the future.

Qualitative and quantitative PCR methods for detection of three lines of genetically modified potatoes.
Qualitative and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods have been developed for the detection of genetically modified (GM) potatoes. The combination of specific primers for amplification of the promoter region of Cry3A gene, potato leafroll virus replicase gene, and potato virus Y coat protein gene allows to identify each line of NewLeaf, NewLeaf Y, and NewLeaf Plus GM potatoes. Mu...

In Japan, 8 lines of genetically modified (GM) potato (2 lines of NewLeaf potato; NL, 3 lines of NewLeaf Plus potato; NLP, and 3 lines of NewLeaf Y potato; NLY) have already been authorized as safe for use in foods and feeds. We have developed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods for the qualitative detection of the GM potatoes for the screening and the identification of NL, NLP and NLY. The...

Many studies have been conducted on the Kurds and their movements. Most authors have considered historical dimensions or applied limited theoretical variables, but have not been able to identify the variables to identify the key reasons behind the rise and fall of Kurdish movements in an explanatory theoretical model. Consequently, there is neither available data about their rise, continuity, a...

This article examines the rise and fall of the Peace Process and questions the reason for which the United States of America was successful in bringing the two sides to the negotiating table during the 1990s. It investigates the reason for which the process ultimately failed, as well as the reason for which Washingtonwas unsuccessful in restarting the peace process in the past decade. It is arg...

This paper investigated the response of major food crop yields namely beans, cassava, Irish potatoes, maize and sweet potatoes to ongoing changes in climate inRwanda. The projected daily precipitation and temperature data for the period2000-2050 used in this study were generated by stochastic weather generator(LARS-WG) from daily raw data for the period 1961 -2000. These data werecollected from ...
